Garden Rototilling

Lawn Tilling For Beautiful, Healthy Lawns

To make garden tilling easier and more effective, follow these steps:

  • Clean up your garden. Remove weeds, stones, and any debris that could damage your rototiller and delay tilling.
  • Mark the areas you’d like to till. Stick to flat ground or moderate slopes, as tilling on steep ground can be dangerous. Mark boundaries and rows with string or lumber.
  • Spread compost evenly over the marked areas. Fall is an ideal time for tilling since the soil is still relatively dry, allowing you to prepare for the upcoming planting season. Spread compost about four to five inches deep before tilling to ensure it mixes well with the soil.
  • Consider mulch in spring tilling. If you’re tilling in the spring and applied leaves as mulch in the fall, they should already have been tilled into the soil. Leaving them on the surface can make your garden too wet to till in the spring.
  • Rake and till mulch. Alternatively, rake the leaves off to the side of the garden in the fall, then till them into the soil in the spring.
